Our 8th grade social studies class is learning all about Japan! In addition to studying the geography, climate, and vegetation of the Japanese archipelago, we are learning about the unique culture of this small but important island nation. This week we looked at Japanese systems of writing, figuring out how to write our names with Japanese katakana letters and practicing writing numbers in Japanese. Today, we got to see some examples of traditional Japanese clothing, and some of our students even got to wear a kimono or a yukata, a Japanese robe made of cotton.
On Monday, we will be using Google Earth’s “Street Tours” to explore the ancient Japanese city of Kyoto, visiting temples, shrines, and castles, several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
